This perennial grass has basal weeping foliage that forms a compact rounded habit with an extensive roots system. It has silvery-green to purplish weeping, grass-like leaves and the pale grey flower heads appear above the foliage throughout summer.

Muhlenbergia rigensis naturally found in North America from Arizona to California, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas growing in moist to drier grasslands, woodlands, coastal shrubland (chaparral) and conifer forest.

It prefers an open sunny position and grows in well-drained, moderately fertile moist sandy-stony soils that are seasonally wet to dry and is frost tender but drought tolerant.

Deer Grass is grown for its weeping foliage and strong root system. It is planted along borders in small or arid gardens or used as a container plant. It is suitable for coastal and inland regions establishing in 1-2 years but may be short lived. This plant is also used regurgitation of native habitats and soil stabilisation along water courses.
