This large tree has a reddish-brown furrowed trunk with ascending branches that form a domed crown. It has leathery dark green oblong leaves and the male and female flowers appear on the same tree in a spike during spring.

Notholithocarpus densiflorusis naturally found in Western North America from California to southwest Oregon and east to Sierra Nevada growing in Redwood or mixed evergreen forests and Yellow Pine forest from sea level to an altitude of 2,438 m (8,000 ft).

It prefers an open sunny to semi shaded wind protected position and grows in well-drained moderately fertile sandy clay soils that are acidic tending neutral and is frost and slightly drought tolerant.

Tanbark Oak is grown for its attractive foliage and domed habit. The displayed in parks and gardens along borders as a tall screen or as a specimen. It is also used in woodland settings and in coastal gardens. It is suitable to coastal and mountainous regions establishing in 3-5 years and is long-lived. This tree is not commonly cultivated and may be difficult to obtain requiring a specialist nursery. ID 3409
