This small shrub has upright branched woolly stems that form a compact rounded habit. It has dull green broad lance-shaped scented leaves and the pale lavender bell-shaped flowers appear along the stems, from late spring to early summer.

It prefers a well-drained sandy stony moist to clay soils that are moderately fertile in an open sunny to semi shaded position and is deer and drought tolerant but frosts tender.
Woodbalm is grown for its low bushy habit and the flowers. It is planted in small or fragrant gardens along borders or used in patio pots and planter boxes. It is suitable for coastal and adjoining low land regions establishing in 1-2 years that may be short lived.
