This rhizomatous perennial sub-shrub has woody base spreading stems that form a compact mound habit. It has a grey green hairy narrow leaves and the tube-shape fuchsia-like red flowers appear in a cluster from spring to autumn.

Epilobium canumis naturally found in North America from California to Baja California growing on the dry slopes and chaparral from sea level to an altitude of 3,300m (10,000 ft). It grows in coastal sage scrub, Yellow Pine forests, Red Fir forest and sub-Alpine forests.

It prefers an open sunny position with wind protection and grows in a very well drained, poor to moderately fertile soils and is very drought and frost tolerant.
