This shrub has flexible smooth greyish upright branches from the base that form a dense rounded habit. It has divided grey green thread-like leaves and the small yellowish green flower heads appear in a cluster from mid summer to autumn.

Artemisia californicais naturally found in North America from central to southern California growing in chaparral or in coastal stage scrub and appearing on the northern or western slopes inland, from sea level to an altitude of 800 m (2600 ft).

It prefers a well-drained moderately fertile sandy to clay soil with a pH of 5-8, in an open sunny position and dislikes wet summers.This hardy plant is drought and cold weather tolerant.

The California Sagebrush is grown for its bushy habit and the foliage. It is planted in small or arid gardens along borders or used in regeneration sites. It is suitable for coastal and inland regions establishing in 2-3 years and is moderately long lived. The leaves from the plant can been used as a spice in cooking or used to make tea. ID 3398

Note:
After fire in its native habitat the plant re-sprouts from the base and has an extensive root system, which stores nutrients for new growth or it regrows from seed.
