This large shrub to small tree has an upright reddish-brown trunk with spreading branches that form and irregular rounded crown. It has grey green oblong leathery leaves and the small urn-shaped white pink flowers appear in a cluster during spring.

It prefers an open sunny to partially shade position and grows in well-drained moderately fertile sandy stony acidic soils with a pH 5-6, although under cultivation it will tolerate alkaline soils and is a drought and frost tolerant.
