This semi-evergreen fern has a short rhizome that forms a clump. It has spreading fan-shaped mid-green divided branched dark stemmed fronds with lobed leaflets and the fertile fronds produced spores during summer.

Adiantum aleuticumis naturally found in western North America from north-west California and that the San Francisco Bay area to the northern Channel Islands and extends to western Canada and Alaska. It is also found in eastern Asia and grows along moist stream embankments and in moist rocky places in the understory of forests from sea level to an altitude of 3,000 m (9,842 ft).
It prefers a semi-shaded to shaded wind protected humid position but will tolerate full sun and grows in well-drained, organic rich sandy-stony to clay loams tending alkaline and serpentine soil with a pH range from 6.1 to 7.5.
The Western Maidenhair Fern is grown for its attractive foliage and spreading habit. It is planted along shaded borders or in rock crevices in retaining walls and in the understory in moist forests. It is also grown in patio pots or planter boxes and is planted around water features for a tropical effect. It is suitable for coastal and low mountain regions and establishes in 2-3 years and is long-lived. Under ideal conditions plant spreads quickly and may become a weed invading garden beds or paving cracks. ID 3389
