This rhizomatous semi-evergreen perennial has large dark green lance-shaped basal leaves with upright squarish stems that form a clump. It has terminal clusters of bluish funnel-shaped flowers that appear during spring.

It prefers a wind protected position with dappled light to full sun and grows in well drained organic rich moist soils and will tolerate heavier clay. It is frost tolerant but drought tender.
