This robust shrub has intricate pubescent branching that forms a compact rounded to decumbent habit. It has grey-green ovate leaves and the small white tube-shaped flowers appear in a cluster during summer.

Hebe pinguifoliais naturally found in the South Island of New Zealand growing on the eastern side of the main divided from Marlborough to southern Canterbury in the drier mountain regions from an altitude of 900 m to 1700 m (5,000ft) amongst scrub and in rocky places.

It prefers an open sunny position and grows in most well drained moderately fertile moist to drier soils and is frost and drought tolerant.

This hebe is grown for its compact low growing habit and its flowers. It is planted along low borders or used in rockeries and is planted in patio pots or planter boxes. It is suitable for coastal or low-mountain regions and establishes in 2-3 years and is moderately long lived.
