This deciduous shrub has an erect solitary or multiple greyish trunks with slender spreading branches that form an open bushy habit. It has mid-green oblong leaves that turn red in autumn and the urn-shaped white flowers appear in late spring.

Vaccinium parvifoliumis naturally found in North America from south-east Alaska to British Columbia, western Washington and extending to California west of the Cascade Mountains growing on slopes and valleys in moist shaded woodlands, from sea level to an altitude of 1800 m (6,000 ft).

It prefers a sunny to semi-shaded protected position and grows in well-drained organic rich moist soils that are tending acidic, with a pH 4.5-6 and is frost tolerant, drought tender.

The Red Huckleberry is grown for its attractive fruit and autumn colour. It is planted along borders in parks and gardens or used in forest restoration programmes. It is suitable for coastal and low-mountain regions establishing in 3-4 years and is moderately long lived. It is also used in woodland settings as an understory specimen but may be difficult to obtain requiring a specialist nursery. ID 3341
