This shrub has multiple stems from the base with intricate grey-green leafless branching that forms a rounded habit. The tiny scale leaves are not normally present and the pendent bright red pea-shaped flowers appears singularly from spring to autumn.

It prefers an open to exposed semi-shaded to sunny position and grows in well-drained, poor sandy stony to clay soils that are tending acidic. it is drought and frost tolerant and prefers a drier soil.
The Cactus Pea is grown for its dense bushy habit and its bright red pea-shaped flowers. It is planted in small or arid gardens along borders as a low screen or used on embankments. It is also planted in large tubs or planter boxes and is used in commercial landscapes requiring little care.
It is suitable to inland regions and establishes in 2-3 years and is moderately long lived. The shrub is also grown in rockeries and responds well to cultivation. It may be difficult to obtain outside its native region requiring a specialist nursery. ID 3334
