This variable shrub has upright spreading woody stems that form a compact rounded habit. It has broad leathery elliptical mid-green leaves and the small pink to purplish star-shaped flowers appear solitary or in a cluster from autumn to summer.

It prefers an open sunny position and grows in well-drained moderately fertile white to grey sandy or clay loams and gravelly soils that are tending acidic and is drought and mildly frost tolerant.
