This upright bushy shrub has grey stems with no lignotuber and peeling bark with many branches forming a compact rounded habit. It has blue green needle-like leaves and the purplish brown pendant flower head appears during summer.

It prefers very well drained deep white or grey sandy-gravelly soil in an open sunny position and is drought and frost tolerant but is killed by fire and regenerate from seed.
The Nodding Banksia is grown for its low rounded habit and flowers. It is planted in small or native gardens and in rockeries as a specimen. It is suitable coastal regions establishing in 2-3 years and has moderately long lived. It is also grown in containers and used on roof gardens but may be difficult to cultivate in the humid eastern states preferring a mediterranean climate. ID 3298
