Banksia ilicifoliais naturally found in coastal regions of south-west Western Australia from Albany to Perth growing in white or grey sand on dunes and low-lying woodlands. Its growth habit varies depending on its environmental conditions from an erect tree to a large irregular shrub.
It prefers a very well drained moderately fertile sandy soil with a limestone base in a open to exposed sunny position and is frost and drought tolerant.
Holly-leaved Banksia is grown for its flowers and upright habit. It is planted in coastal gardens as a specimen tree or used in bushland settings. It is suitable to coastal regions and establishes in 3-5 years and as long lived.
When planting in domestic gardens care should be taken as fallen leaves are very prickly and is planted along borders as a tall screen and is excellent at attracting honey eating birds. ID 3292
