This small tree has a upright slender trunk with ascending spreading branches that form a pyramidal crown. It has large pendant leathery glossy green oblong leaves and the small white saucer-shaped flowers are followed by edible yellow fruit.

Garcinia xanthochymusis naturally found from India to Burma and extending to the eastern Himalayas were it grows in hillside forests. It prefers a semi-shaded position when young and tolerates full sun as it matures in an open position. It grows in most well drained fertile moist soils and is drought and frost tender.

False Mangosteen is grown for its habit and colourful edible fruit. It is planted in parks and gardens as a specimen tree and may be used as a bonsai subject. It is suitable for low-mountain regions and establishes in 3-4 years.

It is also grown in tropical gardens and botanical collections as a specimen or is cultivated for its fruit and sap that yields a yellow pigment that is used in watercolour paints or for dying material. ID 3269
