This rhizomatous fern has upright broad-triangular bright green fronds and forms a dense clump. It has lower sterile divided fronds and upper fertile fronds with tassel like tips that are appear during summer and the foliage turns yellowish during autumn.

Osmunda regalisis naturally found from Europe to north, central and South America, Asia, Africa and Madagascar but is not found in Australasia. It is grows from sea level to an altitude of 2000 m (6,000 ft) and appears in woodlands or forests along or near water courses where the rhizomes are kept wet.
It prefers a fertile organic rich, moist to boggy soil that is tending acidic in a semi-shaded to full sun protected position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.
Royal Fern is grown for its foliage and spreading habit. It is planted in parks and gardens around water features or used along shady damp borders.
