This rhizomatous perennial sub-shrub has upright slender drooping unarmed branches that form a bushy clump. It has dark green needle-like leaves and the whitish green tube-shape pendant flowers appear in a cluster during summer.

Asparagus officinalisis naturally found from Europe to Asia and northern Africa growing in pastures or cultivated fields, open woodlands and in disturbed soils. It has also naturalised in North America growing on the coast tolerating saline conditions and inland.
It prefers a well-drained moderately fertile moist light soil in an open sunny to semi shaded wind protected position and is drought and frost tolerant.
Common Asparagus is grown for its edible shoots. It is planted in domestic or commercial vegetable gardens preferring a cooler climate. It is suitable for coastal regions and establishes in 2-3 years and is moderately long lived. This perennial may also be grown in containers and in some regions it has become a weed.
It has a low water requirement once established (Scale: 1-drop from 3), responding to mulch and an occasional deep watering during dry periods, particularly for young plants. ID 3187
