This herbaceous rhizomatous perennial has upright reddish-green stems with dense foliage and forms a rounded clump. It has large diamond shaped dark green mottled leaves and the white or purplish funnel-shaped flowers appear in spring.

It prefers a well-drained deep humus rich moist soil that is acidic, tending neutral in a protected semi shaded position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.
The Giant Trillium is grown for its foliage and flowers. It is planted in small or cottage gardens along shaded borders or used in moist rockeries as a specimen.
