This rhizomatous herbaceous perennial has upright foliage and flowers that form a clump. It has large heart to kidney-shaped grey green leaves and the solitary white cup-shaped flowers appear amongst the foliage during early spring.

Sanguinaria canadensais naturally found from eastern North America extending to Florida growing in the understory of moist woodlands in well drained moderately fertile humus rich sandy to light clay soil with reliable moisture. It prefers a semi-shaded to full sun position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.
Bloodroot is grown for its flowers and clumping habit. It is planted in shaded damp rockeries or used along herbaceous perennial borders in small or cottage gardens. It is suitable for coastal or inland regions establishing from division in 3 to 4 years and is long lived. It is also grown in containers and planted in woodland settings. ID 3116
