This deciduous tree has a solitary or multiple trunks with spreading-drooping branches that form a open rounded crown. It has dark green divided leaves with small oblong leaflets and the golden yellow pea-shaped flowers appear in a raceme during spring.

Sophora microphyllais naturally found throughout both island of New Zealand growing along rivers and forest margins in coastal lowlands and low mountain regions from sea level to an altitude of760m (2,493 ft).
It prefers an open sunny position but will tolerate some shade but dislikes humidity. It grows in well drained to damp organic rich stony-soilsand is frost and cold tolerant but marginally drought resistant.
Kowhai is grown for its flowers and its spreading crown. It is planted in parks and gardens as a specimen tree for shade or is used in woodland settings. It is also planted to attract birds and is used in botanic collections. It is suitable for coastal and low-mountain regions and establishes in 3-5 years and is long lived. ID 3113
