This herbaceous bulbous perennial has upright foliage that forms a dense clump. It has a long almost cylindrical dark green leaves and the bright yellow funnel-shape flowers appear solitary amongst the foliage during mid spring.

It prefers a well-drained fertile moist soil that is neutral tending acidic in an open sunny position and is frost and moderately drought tolerant.
The Hoop-petticoat daffodil is grown for its flowers and clumping habit. It is planted in parks and gardens along herbaceous borders or allowed to naturalise in grassy areas that dry out during summer. It is suitable for coastal and inland regions establishing in 3 to 4 years and is long lived.
