This perennial has a thick creeping rhizome that forms a clumping habit. It has erect large mid-green rounded leathery leaves that turn red in autumn and the pink tinged white funnel-shaped flowers appear in clusters above the foliage from early to mid spring.

Bergenia stracheyiis naturally found from eastern Afghanistan to northern India, Kashmir, Nepal, western Pakistan and Tajikstan growing amongst forests in rock crevices on the mountains and the adjoining valleys at an altitude from 3900 m to 4500 m (14,850 ft).
It prefers a semi-shaded to sunny protected to open position and grows in well-drained organic rich moist soils that are tending acidic with a pH 6.6-8.5 and is frost and mildly drought tolerant.
This Bergenia is grown for its attractive flowers, clumping habit and foliage. It is grown in moist rockeries or used along front borders in parks and small or alpine gardens. It is also grown in shaded patio pots or planter boxesor as a specimen amongst other perennials.
