This coniferous tree has an upright greyish trunk with spreading branches that form a conical habit. It has dark green needle like leaves that are arranged densely along the stems and the tree produces cylindrical female cones during spring.

Abies sachalinensisis naturally found in Hokkaido Japan, growing in mountainous regions on northerly slopes up to 1600 m (5249 ft) in altitude.

It grows in moist but not wet well drained clay soil that is tending acidic with a pH 6.1-6.5 and prefers an open sunny to semi shaded position. It is frost and drought tender and is intolerant of atmospheric pollution.

The Sakhilin Fir is grown for its habit and foliage. It is planted in parks and large gardens as a lawn specimen tree or used in Japanese gardens. It establishes in 7-9 years and is suitable for low-mountain regions but is not commonly cultivated domestically. It is however grown for it timber which is used for pulping, construction and ship building. ID 3056
