This semi-evergreen shrub has upright arching reddish stems, armed with spines and forms a rounded bushy habit. It has reddish new elliptical leaves that become dark green with a spiny tip and the small yellow cup-shaped flowers appear in spring.

It grows in most well drained moderately fertile moist sandy stony to clay loams that are tending acidic with a pH 6-7. It prefers an open to expose sunny to semi shaded position and is frost and mildly drought tolerant.
