This large coniferous tree has a red brown trunk with bark that exfoliates in long strips and has upright branching that forms a compact conical habit. It has glossy green needle-like leaves and produces reddish brown female cones.

Note:
This very slow growing tree is broadly pyramidal when young and the upright horizontal branches are arranged in whorls, becoming more pendant with age. Mature trees have a more open habit, and may be conical to column with a solitary or multiple trunks.
