This shrub to small tree has solitary or multiple trunks with greyish flaky bark and spreading branches that form a compact rounded crown. It has dark green leathery oblong leaves and the broad bell-shape white flowers appear in trusses in mid spring.

Rhododendron calophytumis naturally found from Szechwan in south-west China to Tibet growing in woodlands in mountainous regions at an altitude of 1400 m to 4000 m (12,000 ft).

It prefers a well drained humus rich, moist soil that is tending acidic pH of 4.5 to 5.5, and responds to mulching with compost that leaf mould. It grows in a semi-shaded to dappled light, wind protected position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.

This Rhododendron is grown for its flowers and upright habit. It is planted in parks and gardens along borders for screening and for foliage contrast. It is suitable for cool mountain regions and establishes in 3 to 5 years and is long lived. The shrub may also be grown in large tubs or planter boxes and used in semi shaded courtyards as a specimen. ID 3038
