This semi-evergreen perennial has slender stiff stems that form a bushy habit. It has dark green spiny toothed leaflets and the large greenish saucer-shaped flowers appear in a cluster just above the foliage from late winter to early spring.

It prefers a semi-shaded or dappled light to a sunny wind protected position and grows in well drained, deep organic rich moist sandy-stony to clay loam with a limestone base with a pH from neutral to alkaline. It is frost, drought and cold tolerant once established.
