This shrub has upright stems with red-brown bark and intricate branching that forms a rounded habit. It has pale green broad lanced-shaped leaves and the purple-pink star-shaped, very fragrant flowers appear in clusters in early spring before the leaves.

Daphne mezereum is naturally found from Caucasus to Turkey and Siberia growing in mixed or deciduous woodlands and in low-mountain regions.

It prefers a well drained organic rich moist cool soil that is slightly alkaline to slightly acidic in an open sunny to semi shaded protected position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.

The February Daphne is grown for its fragrant flowers and is planted in small or cottage gardens as a specimen or used in low borders. It is suitable for protected coastal and low-mountain regions establishing in 3 to 5 years but is short lived. It may also be grown in containers or planted in rockeries. ID 3029

Note:
Daphne is intolerant of root disturbance and the roots should be kept moist and cool with adequate mulch.
