Livistona benthamiiis naturally found from Papua New Guinea to northern Australia growing in wet lowlands, monsoon forests and around swamps. It also grows on flood planes tolerating temporary inundation and saline conditions.
It prefers deep moderately drained heavy alluvial rich loams in a wind protected sunny position and is drought and frost tender.
The Fan Palm is grown for its attractive drooping crown and is planted in damp areas in a large garden, park or in rural properties. It is used as a specimen or in group plantings along borders and along creeks. It establishes in 4 to 7 years and is long lived tolerating saline conditions.
Under cultivation the palm grows quickly in optimum sub-tropical conditions but is slower growing in warm temperate regions or on poor soil. ID 2997
