This tree has a short trunk and spreading branches that form a dense rounded-oblong crown. It has divided leaves with glossy green oblong leaflets and the yellow-orange fragrant flowers appear in dense clusters during spring, followed by reddish pods.

Saraca indica is naturally found from India to Malaysia, Indonesia and southern China growing along river banks or as an understorey in rainforests.

It prefers a semi shaded to sunny position and grows in well drained organic rich moist soils that are tending acidic and is drought and frost tender.

Asoka is grown for its habit and its colourful flowers. It is planted in tropical gardens as a specimen or in a rainforest setting as an understorey plant. It is also used along water courses on the coast and inland. It establishes in 3 to 6 years and is long lived. ID 2987

This tree is planted around temples in its native region and regarded as sacred in India where Buddhists believe that Buddha was born under it and the Hindus have dedicated it to Kama the god of erotic love.
