This large solitary monocarpic palm has a greyish ringed trunk to 750mm (2½ft) in diameter that is clad in spiral leaf bases. It has large bluish-green fan-like fronds that form rounded crown and the small cream flowers appear on a huge cluster.

Corypha utanis naturally found from India to south-east Asia and the Philippine islands extending to northern Australia growing in tropical monsoonal low-lying regions on the coast and forming large colonies. The palm grows slowly at first and prefers an open sunny position in well drained soils with regular amounts of moisture and is frost and drought tender.

Consideration should be taken when selecting a planting position. After fruiting the maturity large trunk dies and collapses damaging surrounding vegetation and structures.
