This solitary palm has a slender closely ringed trunk with a prominent crownshaft up to 1m (3ft) long and a rounded crown. The arching fronds have upright linear leaflets and the cream-coloured flowers appear in clusters from spring to summer.

It prefers a well drained, moist organic rich calcareous soil and when young grow in a shaded to semi shaded protected position and is cold, frost and drought tender.
