This large tropical tree has an upright trunk with grey brown flaky bark and horizontal branching that forms a dense crown. It has glossy dark green heart-shaped leaves and the tiny yellow tube-shaped flowers appear in a rounded head in late spring.

Nauclea orientalisis naturally found from tropical Asia to India and in Australia where it grows in Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland. It commonly occurs in rainforest along stream banks or around swampy areas and also associated with monsoonal lowlands.

It prefers a well to moderately drained organic rich sandy loam that is tending acidic in a open sunny position and is drought and frost tender.

The Leichhardt Tree is grown for its habit and attractive foliage. It is planted in large gardens as a shade tree or used along water courses in tropical settings. It establishes in 3 to 4 years and is long lived and is suitable for coastal and lowland regions. ID 2972

Note:
During dry or cool periods the tree is semi-deciduous and grows as far south as Coffs Harbour in New South Wales.
