This clustering palm forms an underground trunk and produces large upright dark green arching fronds on spiny stems. The small male and female tube-shaped flowers appear in a cluster that grows from the leaf bases followed by reddish fruit in summer.

Salacca magnificais naturally found in Borneo growing in the understorey of rainforests from sea level to an altitude of 1000m (3000ft) forming thickets along creeks.

It prefers a moist organic rich well drained to swampy soil in a shaded wind protected humid position and is drought and frost tender.

This palm is grown for its fantastic large leaves and is planted in rainforest gardens for a jungle effect. It is also planted as an understorey along water courses in large gardens. It is suitable for coastal and mountainous regions and establishes in 3 to 5 years and requires ample room to grow. ID 2970
