This fan palm forms and underground trunk that slightly emerges and produces very large arching mid-green diamond-shaped ribbed fronds that fan out forming a dense crown. The tiny cream cup-shaped flowers appear in clusters during spring.

Johannesteijsmannia magnificais naturally found on the Malaysia Peninsular growing on the floor of rainforests in lowlands and on steep slopes and ridge tops of the adjoining mountains to an altitude of 500m (1,500ft).

It prefers a protected shaded position with high humidity and grows in organic rich well drained soil that is constantly moist and is drought and frost tender.

The Silver Joey Palm is grown for its magnificent large fronds and is planted as understorey filler in a rainforest setting or in group plantings for parks and large gardens. It is also used in gully or embankments plantings establishing in 4 to 6 years and is suitable for coastal or mountainous regions.
