This clustered or solitary stilt palm has a slender dark ringedbrownish trunkand prop-roots at the base. It has a swollen orange-red crownshaft and the divided dark green fronds are arching. The yellow-orange flowers appear in clusters during spring.

Areca vestiaria is naturally found in Celebes and Moluccas in eastern Indonesia growing in rainforests along water courses. Clumps may grow up to 5m (15ft) wide and the trunk is up to 200mm (7µin) in diameter.

It prefers a well drained organic rich, slightly acidic soil with reliable moisture and grows in a semi shaded to full sun humid position and is drought, frost and cold tender.

Orange Collar Palm is grown for its colourful crownshaft, compact habit and its clumping habit. It is planted in tropical gardens along borders or as an understorey specimen. It is suitable for coastal and mountain regions establishing in 3 to 5 years. It is also used as a glasshouse or indoor specimen in cooler climates. The division of suckers is normally unsuccessful.
