This perennial has a branched edible aromatic rhizome that give rise to cane-like stems that form a upright bushy habit. It has dark green broad banana-like leaves and the yellow-brown tube-shaped flowers appear in an erect brownish spike during summer.

It prefers a well drained organic rich moist soil that is tending acidic and grows in a semi shaded to sunny protected position and is drought and frost tender.
The Chocolate Beehive Ginger is grown for its flowers and its clumping habit. It is planted in parks and gardens for a tropical effect in beds or along borders. It is also planted in the understory of tropical forests or used around a large water feature.
It is suitable for coastal and low-mountain tropical regions and establishes in 2-3 years. In cold regions it is grown in the ground in glasshouses and in cooler regions it is heavily mulched for the winter period. ID 2933
Note:
This plant is not commonly cultivated outside its native region and may be difficult to obtain requiring a specialist nursery. The flowers only appear in a tropical climate but the plant will tolerate colder regions where it tends to be herbaceous.
