This clustering feather palm has upright slender stems topped with an attractive orange-red crownshaft. The arching bright green divided fronds form a small crown and the small flowers appear in a branched spike below the crownshaft during spring.

Cyrtostachys rendais naturally found from the Malay Peninsula to Borneo and Sumatra growing in rainforests or in swampy areas. It prefers a well drained humus rich moist soil in a semi shaded to full sun position and is drought, cold and frost tender.

The Lipstick Palm is grown for its graceful habit and colourful crownshaft. It is planted in parks and gardens along borders or as a lawn specimen and used for a tropical effect. It establishes in 3 to 5 years and is suitable for coastal regions. It is also used in group plantings or as a container specimen. ID 2932

Note:
In its native environment the palm can attain a height of over 20m (60ft) tall but under cultivation the palm is much smaller. In cold climates it is grown under glass with a minium temperature of 8ºC (45ºF) for a short period of time.
