This solitary feather palm has a grey ringed trunk up to 400mm (16in) in diameter and has a dense rounded crown with no crownshaft. It has arching dark green divided fronds and the small white flowers appear in upright clusters amongst the leaves.

Pigafetta filarisis naturally found from Celebes to Moluccas, Irian Jaya and New Guinea from sea level to an altitude of 660m (2000ft) growing along rainforest margins or on open river banks. It is not found in undisturbed rainforest but soon appears cleared land.
It grows in deep nutrient rich open textured loams in an open sunny, wind protected position. It is very cold sensitive and drought tender, requiring reliable moisture and high humidity but grows very quickly.
The Wanga Palm is grown for its majestic habit and is planted in large tropical gardens or botanical collections. It is suitable for coastal and low-mountain regions growing in cleared land and establishing in 2 to 3 years. It is also used in group planting of 3 or more at different heights around water features for a tropical effect or as a lawn specimen. The timber is used in construction in its native region.ID 2931
