This solitary feather palm has stilt-roots and a ringed trunk up to 300mm (1ft) diameter with black spines. It has arching deep green divided fronds that form a rounded crown and yellow flowers appear in a long cluster followed by greenish fruit.

Verschaffeltia splendidais naturally found in the Seychelles growing in rainforest on steep slopes to an altitude of 600m (2000ft) in well drained organic rich, constantly moist rocky soils. It prefers a humid wind protected position with full sun and is drought and frost tender.

The Seychelles Stilt Palm is grown for its beautiful large leaves and is planted in groups for a tropical effect in parks and large gardens. It is suitable for coastal or mountainous regions and is planted on stony embankments. It is grown under glass in cool climates and requires constant moisture. ID 2926

Note:
It has spineless stilt roots up to 2m (6ft) long that form a cone-shape at the base of the plant and the trunk is covered in black needle-like spines up to 76mm (3in) long.
