This palm is clustering or occasionally solitary with a short trunk that is covered in leaf bases. The dense spreading crown consists of large dark-green rounded divided fronds and the small yellow tube-shaped flowers appear in an upright cluster during spring.

It prefers rich alluvial soil that is moderately drained in a semi shaded wind protected position that is humid. It tolerates full sun but the leaves may be damaged and is drought and frost tender.
The Pleated Licuala is grown for its attractive rounded foliage. It is planted as an understorey in a rainforest setting, along creeks or in damp gullies. It can also be grown in containers when young and establishes in 3 to 5 years. It is suitable for coastal and mountainous regions and is planted along borders in parks. ID 2916
