This medium to large tree has a grey buttress trunk with spreading branches that form a rounded crown. It has broad leathery dark green oblong leaves and the tiny bell-shaped flowers appear in clusters at the end of the branches during summer.

Cryptocarya hypospodiais naturally found in Australia growing in Queensland from south west Gympie to the Daintree River in northern Queensland, appearing in sub-tropical rainforests along the coast and into the adjoining tablelands.
It prefers a well drained organic rich moist soil in an open sunny to semi shaded position and is slightly frost tolerant but drought tender.
The Northern Laurel is grown for its foliage and its habit. It is planted in large tropical gardens and parks for shade or as a specimen in a rainforest setting. It is suitable for coastal or the adjoining tablelands establishing in 3 to 5 years and is long lived. It may be difficult to obtain from nurseries. ID 2911

It is very simular to Cryptocarya obovatadiffering in broader thinner leaves that may be pointed and the underside may be glabrous.
