This rhizomatous sedge has grass-like leaves that form a dense spreading habit. The soft textured narrow leaves are bright green and the flowers appear in a pendant cluster amongst the foliage during spring.

Carex germinatais naturally found throughout New Zealand growing in wetland areas and along rivers or creeks predominately on the western side of the islands from sea level to an altitude of 600m (2,000ft).

It prefers an open sunny to semi shaded position and is frost or wind tolerant but is drought tender.

Cutty Grass is grown for its tufted habit and is planted in large gardens around water features or used in revegetation of wetland areas. It is also planted along stream banks for soil stabilisation establishing in 2 to 3 years.
