This rhizomatous sedge has grass-like leaves that form a dense tufted habit. The soft textured narrow leaves are dark green with a yellow-orange tip and the flowers appear in a drooping cluster amongst the foliage during spring.

Carex testaceais naturally found throughout New Zealand growing in snow-tussock grasslands to sand dunes from sea level to an altitude of 1,700mm (5,000ft). It prefers an open sunny position and grows in most well drained moderatly fertile soils and is frost, snow and drought tolerant.

This sedge is grown for its foliage and is planted in small gardens along borders or in rockeries and mass planted in large gardens as a ground cover or for edging. It is suitable for coastal and mountainous regions establishing in 1 to 2 years from division. It is also is planted in patio pots or in roof gardens.ID 2898
