This shrub to small tree can have a spreading bushy habit or form an upright trunk to 600mm (2ft) in diameter with spreading branches. It has divided leaves with light green toothed leaflets and the tiny cream star-like flowers appear in clusters in spring.

It tolerates most well drained fertile moist soils in a full sun to semi shaded wind protected position and is very frost and drought tender.

Makamaka is grown for its foliage, flowers and its bushy habit. It is planted in garden borders for screening or used as a street tree.
