This shrub to small tree has upright soft wooded branches that form a rounded bushy habit. It has large glossy green, pointed oblong leaves and the pinkish-red tube-shaped flowers appear in an orange red spike during summer.

Aphelandra sinclairianais naturally found in South America from Costa Rica to Panama growing on forest margins or as an understorey plant on the coast and in the lower mountains. It prefers a well drained organic rich moist soil in a semi shaded humid wind protected position and is drought and frost tender.

This shrub is grown for its flowers and its lush foliage. It is planted in parks and tropical gardens as an understorey filler or in borders. It is also grown in containers establishing in 1 to 2 years but is short lived. It is suitable for coastal regions and is planted around water features for a tropical effect. ID 2883
