This rhizomatous sedge is upright with grass-like leaves that form a tufted habit. The long linear mid-green arching leaves have a soft leathery texture and the straw coloured flowers appear in a large cluster amongst the foliage during spring.

Carex trifidais naturally found throughout New Zealand growing in scattered locations along coastal cliffs or amongst rock out crops and in swampy places.

It prefers an open sunny to semi-shaded position tolerating most well drained moderately fertile soils and will grow in wet conditions. It is drought, wind and frost tolerant.

This sedge is grown for its foliage and is planted in small gardens along borders or in rockeries and mass planted in large gardens as a ground cover or used for edging. It is suitable for coastal and inland regions, establishes in 1 to 2 years from division and is planted in patio pots or in roof gardens or around water features.ID 2859
