This upright glabrous shrub has slender brittle terete branches that form a compact rounded habit. It has pale green pointed oval leaves and the tiny greenish saucer-shaped flowers appear in small clusters during spring.

Geniostoma rupestreis naturally found in New Zealand growing throughout the North Island including Three Kings Island and extending to the northern part of the South Island appearing in coastal and lowland forests.

It prefers a well drained organic rich moist soil, but will tolerate drier conditions and grows in a shaded to sunny protected position with wind and heavy frost protection but is drought tolerant.

Hangehange is grown for its foliage and bushy habit. It is planted in shaded gardens or courtyards as filler or used under large trees. It is suitable for coastal regions establishing in 2 to 3 years and may be grown in patio pots or on roof gardens. It is quick growing but needs protection from heavy frosts. ID 2851
