This tree has a solitary blackish trunk to 600mm (2ft) in diameter with spreading branches that form a rounded crown. The divided leaves have oblong glossy green leaflets and the tiny reddish flowers appear in clusters in spring followed by red fruit.

Alectryon excelsusis naturally found in New Zealand growing in tha lowland forests from North Cape to Banks Peninsula in well drained fertile alluvial soils with reliable moisture. It prefers a protected sunny position but will tolerate some shade and is drought tender but light frost tolerant.
Titoki is grown for its habit and it colourful fruit. It is planted in parks and gardens as shade or specimen tree and is used as a street tree. It is suitable for coastal and lowland regions establishing in 3 to 5 years. It is also planted in borders as a tall screen or commercial sites between buildings and used in group plantings in a woodland setting. ID 2848
