This upright spreading shrub has slender interlaced reddish-brown branches with zigzag twigs that form a rounded habit. It has tiny heart-shaped bright green leaves that are deciduous in cold climates and the tiny star-shaped flowers appear in spring.

Muehlenbeckia astonii is naturally found in the North and South Island of New Zealand growing on the coast and the adjoining lowlands along river beds and levies but is rare in its natural environment.

It prefers an open to exposed sunny position and grows in most well drained sandy-gravelly moderately fertile drier soils and is drought, wind and frost tolerant.

This shrub is grown for its intricate branching and rounded habit. It is planted in small gardens or commercial sites as a specimen or used in a group planting along borders or on embankments. It is suitable for coastal or low mountain regions establishing in 3 to 4 years and under cultivation it tends to form an open habit. ID 2842
